Who Knows?
The Use of Knowledge Management in Crisis

Mats Koreus (2008)

Crises are hotbeds for uncertainty and confusion especially since the world around us is growing increasingly complex. Decision makers are put in their positions to provide effective leadership in troubled times, but cannot be expected to know or even understand every detail of the complicated mechanisms involved in modern crises. An age-old solution to this problem is to call in advisors and experts to make sense of matters and to aid in formulating a strategy for dealing with the situation at hand.

This study examines the possibility of merging two management fields developed from a common past: crisis management and knowledge management. The hope is finding a way to improve the efficiency of expert consultations in times of crisis. Both fields are built on theories of organisational knowledge, in part or in whole, and deal with the common problem of retaining and quickly recalling past experiences.
